Bound contract

  1. Ordinary read intent

The consumer selects notes-v2 binding to read the title of note-A. Atlas will evaluate the supplied inventory records; the Notes API has not received a request yet.

    Atlas consumer
    Public title read intent
    Notes API
    No receipt; local inventory
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  2. Read prepared

The note-A read request is prepared with inventory key notes-v2. The readPublicNote binding will be checked against API inventory; the consumer’s version selection is not acceptance.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v2
    Notes API
    No receipt; local inventory
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  3. Read at API

The normal read has arrived at the API; inventory/contract and business permission are not yet accepted.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v2
    Notes API
    Read arrived; binding pending
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  4. Local bound policy

Active notes-v2/policy7 binding and function/object/read-field permissions pass before preparing the owned read.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v2
    Notes API
    Bound policy7; resource read ready
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  5. Store received read

The permitted ordinary read has arrived; forming the resource body is a separate local projection.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v2
    Notes API
    Bound policy7; resource read ready
    Owned note store
    Read arrived; response projection pending
  6. Local title projection

The store prepares title-only read projection without owner/tenant fields or any mutation.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v2
    Notes API
    Bound policy7; resource read ready
    Owned note store
Title response ready; Tea & Bread
  7. Body at API

The owned public title has arrived at the API and is ready for relay within contract response keys.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v2
    Notes API
Public body arrived; consumer response ready
    Owned note store
Title response ready; Tea & Bread
  8. Consumer result

The ordinary title response has arrived; this is not deployment inventory or browser enforcement execution.

    Atlas consumer
    Response arrived; title=Tea & Bread
    Notes API
Public body arrived; consumer response ready
    Owned note store
Title response ready; Tea & Bread

Retired version

  1. Ordinary read intent

The consumer selects notes-v1 binding to read the title of note-A. Atlas will evaluate the supplied inventory records; the Notes API has not received a request yet.

    Atlas consumer
    Public title read intent
    Notes API
    No receipt; local inventory
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  2. Read prepared

The note-A read request is prepared with inventory key notes-v1. The readLegacyNote binding will be checked against API inventory; the consumer’s version selection is not acceptance.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v1
    Notes API
    No receipt; local inventory
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  3. Read at API

The normal read has arrived at the API; inventory/contract and business permission are not yet accepted.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v1
    Notes API
    Read arrived; binding pending
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  4. Local binding evidence

The notes-v1 entry has lifecycle=retired. This application denies retired binding and does not proceed to store reading; the supplied entry does not prove removal of an external deployment.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v1
    Notes API
    Binding denied: retired
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  5. Local no-delivery gate

Denied or unknown binding stops resource reading; a described schema does not provide business permission.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v1
    Notes API
No resource read; no body or mutation
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  6. Denial prepared

A fixed diagnostic response is prepared while the owned store retains its previous state.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v1
    Notes API
retired denial ready; no resource body
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  7. Consumer received denial

The denial has arrived; absence of protected title delivery is tracked separately from unknown inventory evidence.

    Atlas consumer
    Denial received: retired; no title
    Notes API
retired denial ready; no resource body
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read

Policy drift

  1. Ordinary read intent

The consumer selects notes-v2 binding to read the title of note-A. Atlas will evaluate the supplied inventory records; the Notes API has not received a request yet.

    Atlas consumer
    Public title read intent
    Notes API
    No receipt; local inventory
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  2. Read prepared

The note-A read request is prepared with inventory key notes-v2. The readPublicNote binding will be checked against API inventory; the consumer’s version selection is not acceptance.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v2
    Notes API
    No receipt; local inventory
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  3. Read at API

The normal read has arrived at the API; inventory/contract and business permission are not yet accepted.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v2
    Notes API
    Read arrived; binding pending
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  4. Local binding evidence

Although notes-v2 is active, runtimePolicyRevisionDeclared=6 differs from requiredPolicyRevision=7. The reason is policy-mismatch; positive business gates cannot remove this revision difference.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v2
    Notes API
    Binding denied: policy-mismatch
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  5. Local no-delivery gate

Denied or unknown binding stops resource reading; a described schema does not provide business permission.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v2
    Notes API
No resource read; no body or mutation
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  6. Denial prepared

A fixed diagnostic response is prepared while the owned store retains its previous state.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v2
    Notes API
policy-mismatch denial ready; no resource body
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  7. Consumer received denial

The denial has arrived; absence of protected title delivery is tracked separately from unknown inventory evidence.

    Atlas consumer
    Denial received: policy-mismatch; no title
    Notes API
policy-mismatch denial ready; no resource body
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read

Unknown version

  1. Ordinary read intent

The consumer selects notes-v3 binding to read the title of note-A. Atlas will evaluate the supplied inventory records; the Notes API has not received a request yet.

    Atlas consumer
    Public title read intent
    Notes API
    No receipt; local inventory
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  2. Read prepared

The note-A read request is prepared with inventory key notes-v3. The operation unknown binding will be checked against API inventory; the consumer’s version selection is not acceptance.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v3
    Notes API
    No receipt; local inventory
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  3. Read at API

The normal read has arrived at the API; inventory/contract and business permission are not yet accepted.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v3
    Notes API
    Read arrived; binding pending
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  4. Local binding evidence

No inventory entry is present for inventoryKey=notes-v3, and runtimePolicyRevisionDeclared=null. The reason is inventory-unknown: scope remains unknown and reading is withheld, without inferring hostility or retirement.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v3
    Notes API
    Binding denied: inventory-unknown
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  5. Local no-delivery gate

Denied or unknown binding stops resource reading; a described schema does not provide business permission.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v3
    Notes API
No resource read; no body or mutation
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  6. Denial prepared

A fixed diagnostic response is prepared while the owned store retains its previous state.

    Atlas consumer
    note-A read ready; inventory=notes-v3
    Notes API
inventory-unknown denial ready; no resource body
    Owned note store
    Public title stored; no read
  7. Consumer received denial

The denial has arrived; absence of protected title delivery is tracked separately from unknown inventory evidence.

    Atlas consumer
    Denial received: inventory-unknown; no title
    Notes API
inventory-unknown denial ready; no resource body
    Owned note store

ACTORS · STATE · DATA FLOW

Which deployment does the API contract describe?

Atlas’s notes contract describes readPublicNote. Inventory is more than an endpoint list: host, environment, owner, API version, lifecycle, policy revision, data class and integration flow must align. notes-v2 is active and notes-v1 retired; that marker alone does not prove a real deployment has been removed. Even a public title needs a known store-to-consumer data flow. OpenAPI openapi specifies the description-format version, info.version the document version, and /v2 a product API-version choice; these need not share one version number. The artifact contractFragment is incomplete and illustrates selected fields for a read-only GET and ordinary Tea & Bread response shape.

Description and authorization are separate layers

OpenAPI operationId links a uniquely described operation, and security declares applicable schemes. Multiple schemes in one Security Requirement Object are jointly required, while an array lists alternatives of which one suffices. An empty requirement object {} supports an anonymous alternative; operation-level security: [] removes the top-level declaration, a different representation. Describing these fields does not install runtime enforcement. Atlas separately requires notes.read function permission, a public-note relationship and a title-only response projection. Schema type checks replace none of these business decisions. The response contract restricts exposure to permitted title fields; having a token or scope does not grant reading every object.

Version drift is an evidence question

The fixture checks inventory binding and lifecycle before comparing observed runtime-policy revision with the contract. In policy-drift, the v2 name is correct but declared runtime policy 6 conflicts with contract 7, stopping resource delivery. The unknown-version row lacks inventory evidence and records unknown scope rather than automatically attributing hostility to a host. A deprecated operation warns consumers to migrate; it does not disable a route. Retirement plans need ownership, client migration and removal/deny evidence across ingress and worker integrations. A schema or authorization improvement limited to the new version may leave older deployments connected to the same data under another policy; inventory makes this relationship visible.

Version retired

  1. The operation was matched with inventory

The notes-v1 record has retired lifecycle, policyRevision=6 and readLegacyNote. The supported profile uses readPublicNote and requiredPolicyRevision=7.

    Inventory operation
    Inventory: notes-v1
    Admission gate
    Admission pending
    Title delivery boundary
    Title not prepared
  2. Business gates were read separately

The row declares functionAllowed, objectAllowed and readPropertiesAllowed=true. Those positive values cannot replace the retired-lifecycle check.

    Inventory operation
    Business gates=true
    Admission gate
    Lifecycle retired
    Title delivery boundary
    Admission pending
  3. The inventory-admission boundary stopped processing

expectedAccepted=false with reason=retired. This profile rejects retired-operation admission without claiming removal of an external deployment.

    Inventory operation
    Acceptance=false
    Admission gate
    Reason: retired
    Title delivery boundary
    Delivery=false
  4. Projection remained closed

expectedBody=null and expectedMutation=false. Even a public title used as a learning object does not justify skipping this selected gate.

    Inventory operation
    Known gate denial
    Admission gate
    Mutation=false
    Title delivery boundary
    Body=null
  5. Contract description was not counted as enforcement

deprecated and OpenAPI security declarations are not runtime gates. Defining retirement policy and observing deployment removal require different evidence.

    Inventory operation
    Description ≠ enforcement
    Admission gate
    Fixture deny known
    Title delivery boundary
    External runtime unknown
  6. The denial cause retained its scope

An old-version record alone proves neither vulnerability nor breach. The known result is denied admission and delivery in this inventory profile.

    Inventory operation
    No title delivery
    Admission gate
    No mutation
    Title delivery boundary
    No incident inference

Policy drift

  1. The operation was matched with inventory

The notes-v2 inventory entry is active at policyRevision=7. runtimePolicyRevisionDeclared=6 in the policy-drift row shows a different enforcement expectation for the same operation.

    Inventory operation
    Inventory: notes-v2
    Admission gate
    Admission pending
    Title delivery boundary
    Title not prepared
  2. Business gates were read separately

Even with function, object and property conditions true, required and runtime policy revisions must match. Shape and permission fields cannot erase revision drift.

    Inventory operation
    Business gates=true
    Admission gate
    Required 7; declared 6
    Title delivery boundary
    Admission pending
  3. The inventory-admission boundary stopped processing

expectedAccepted=false with reason=policy-mismatch. An active inventory entry does not permit title delivery across this revision mismatch.

    Inventory operation
    Acceptance=false
    Admission gate
    Reason: policy-mismatch
    Title delivery boundary
    Delivery=false
  4. Projection remained closed

expectedBody=null and expectedMutation=false. Even a public title used as a learning object does not justify skipping this selected gate.

    Inventory operation
    Known gate denial
    Admission gate
    Mutation=false
    Title delivery boundary
    Body=null
  5. Contract description was not counted as enforcement

An OpenAPI security fragment cannot itself enforce the required runtime revision. Description and enforcement provenance are tracked separately.

    Inventory operation
    Description ≠ enforcement
    Admission gate
    Fixture deny known
    Title delivery boundary
    External runtime unknown
  6. The denial cause retained its scope

Policy drift is a reconciliation finding, not data-leak evidence by itself. The differing operation, context and revision remain explicit in this tuple.

    Inventory operation
    No title delivery
    Admission gate
    No mutation
    Title delivery boundary
    No incident inference

ASSUMPTION · BOUNDARY · CONTROL

Treating the documented route as the whole surface

A normal consumer uses the supported notes-v2 contract. The broken assumption is that a deployment absent from current documentation no longer runs or necessarily enforces the same policy. Failure requires parallel versions/environments retaining access to the same data flow with different enforcement; impact follows that integration’s read/action scope. An older version alone is not a vulnerability or breach: retirement and policy evidence matter. The notes-v1 fixture denies at its declared lifecycle gate but does not establish external reachability. Controls reconcile owner-maintained inventory, apply relevant policy to all exposed versions and verify migration/removal. These supplied records explain the boundary without network discovery or calling undocumented operations.

Mistaking contract validity for business permission

Normal request shape and a described security scheme can indicate use of the intended interface. The broken assumption is that they automatically enforce object relationships or response-field permission. Failure requires handlers omitting function/object/property decisions after schema validation or gateway authentication. Impact can be schema-valid unauthorized resource reading or unnecessary field delivery. PermissionRows supply a public-note positive case and each separate denial gate without API calls or discovery. Explicit operation-to-policy binding and minimal response projection preserve the boundary. Missing inventory evidence and object denial are different reasons; collapsing diagnostic fields hides the missing control.

Inventory missing

  1. The unknown-version record was opened

The unknown-version row has inventoryKey=notes-v3 and runtimePolicyRevisionDeclared=null. Listed v1/v2 data cannot fill v3 ownership or lifecycle evidence.

    Inventory/contract observation
    Key: notes-v3
    Reconciliation review
    Revision=null
    Evidence conclusion
    Scope UNKNOWN
  2. The missing-inventory reason was preserved

reason=inventory-unknown is not the same as known object denial. Owner, environment, contract and policy revision need reconciliation.

    Inventory/contract observation
    Inventory unknown
    Reconciliation review
    Ownership evidence missing
    Evidence conclusion
    Admission pending
  3. The safe outcome was separated from evidence

expectedAccepted=false, expectedDelivery=false and expectedBody=null. Safe withheld delivery does not establish that an unknown scope is retired or hostile.

    Inventory/contract observation
    Admission=false
    Reconciliation review
    Unknown scope retained
    Evidence conclusion
    Body=null
  4. An absent access log did not mean removal

unknownEvidence.missingAccessLogMeans says receipt is unknown. No log does not prove deployment removal or route unreachability.

    Inventory/contract observation
    Receipt UNKNOWN
    Reconciliation review
    Reachability UNKNOWN
    Evidence conclusion
    No removal proof
  5. The reconciliation tuple was established

Host, environment, API version, owner, contract revision, policy revision and data flow are reviewed under the same operation. A version path alone cannot replace that tuple.

    Inventory/contract observation
    Operation tuple required
    Reconciliation review
    Owner evidence required
    Evidence conclusion
    No guessed inventory
  6. The review conclusion stayed narrow

This JSON teaches inventory decisions without producing a live exposure inventory. Known withheld delivery is reported alongside unknown deployment state.

    Inventory/contract observation
    Fixture denial known
    Reconciliation review
    Deployment UNKNOWN
    Evidence conclusion

Security logic

  1. The security-requirement form was read

sameObjectAllSchemes defines AND for scheme-A and scheme-B. Two schemes inside one requirement object are required together.

    Inventory/contract observation
    Same object: AND
    Reconciliation review
    Alternatives not reviewed
    Evidence conclusion
    No runtime outcome
  2. The alternatives array was separated

arrayAlternatives defines OR for requirement-A and requirement-B. Reading an object and an alternatives array as the same conjunction changes declaration semantics.

    Inventory/contract observation
    Object: AND
    Reconciliation review
    Array: OR
    Evidence conclusion
    Declaration review
  3. Empty-object semantics were preserved

emptyRequirementObject has representation={} and anonymousAlternative=true. An empty object differs from an empty operation array that removes the root security declaration.

    Inventory/contract observation
    {}: anonymous alternative
    Reconciliation review
    []: operation override
    Evidence conclusion
    Forms distinct
  4. The operation override was reviewed separately

emptyOperationArray declares removesRootDeclaration=true. Review reads root and operation declarations together while retaining descriptionEnforcesRuntime=false.

    Inventory/contract observation
    Override semantics known
    Reconciliation review
    Description enforcement=false
    Evidence conclusion
    No runtime acceptance claim
  5. No business-gate tuple was invented

An OpenAPI scheme declaration does not check object ownership or title-property permission. permissionRows retains separate function, object and properties conditions.

    Inventory/contract observation
    Scheme ≠ object policy
    Reconciliation review
    Function/object/property separate
    Evidence conclusion
    No automatic title grant
  6. Contract review remained separate from enforcement

This review checks declaration operators and override meaning. Runtime enforcement and response projection need separate observations.

    Inventory/contract observation
    Declaration semantics known
    Reconciliation review
    Runtime evidence separate
    Evidence conclusion
    Property delivery unobserved

IMPLEMENTATION · SECURITY CONTROL · VERIFICATION

Reconcile inventory with runtime evidence

Owner inventory records host/environment/API version, contract and policy revisions and data-flow ownership. Runtime observations correlate deployment/route identity and policy revision to the operation; successful documentation builds or absent access logs do not prove retirement. Baseline is active v2/policy7 and an allowed public-note title response. Retired, revision-mismatch and unknown records need distinct reasons; unknown evidence prompts investigation, and no acceptance is not attack attribution. Unavailable telemetry leaves observed state unknown. This local JSON is not an inventory generated from actual exposed services. Reconciliation can record resource class and approved integration direction without moving customer data.

Connect version controls to migration decisions

Contract regression checks expected response keys and function/object/property denial together for readPublicNote. Compare operation security overrides with root policy without losing empty-object, empty-array or alternative semantics. Description-format updates differ from business API changes; raising a schema version does not backport authorization fixes to older deployments. After ownership and consumer migration evidence are complete, independently verify removal/deny state; legacy clients or staging data coupling can cause benign drift. Finite native JSON comparisons check selected revisions/properties, not complete OpenAPI validation or deployed enforcement. Choose backport, a controlled compatibility interval or retirement according to impact and policy differences.

NOW APPLY IT TO THE CASE

Which runtime outcomes are not proved by a version or security declaration?

notes-v2 is matched with supported policy; retirement, drift and unknown scope withhold delivery for different reasons. Contract declarations and live enforcement need separate evidence.

Separate decisions for verified actor, tenant relation and requested action in the case. Do not substitute authentication or proof success for object permission.

inventory
Host/environment/owner/lifecycle and revision records.
contractFragment
Selected description fields, not a complete schema document.
rows
Binding/lifecycle/revision admission and delivery outcomes.
permissionRows
Function/object/property read policy as separate gates.
securitySemantics
OAS requirement composition and override distinctions.

Owned inert inventory/contract and read-only matrix; not network discovery, actual runtime, complete OAS validation or retirement deployment evidence.

Two reality checks

Deprecated=true automatically disables an endpoint.

Description warns consumers to migrate; runtime removal/denial needs separate evidence.

An OpenAPI security scheme also verifies object permissions.

Scheme declaration does not execute runtime function/object/property policy.

YOUR TURN

Work through this story.

Predict the outcome, find the evidence boundary, and explain it in your own words.

notes-v2 has inventory policyRevision=7, but runtimePolicyRevisionDeclared=6. Is delivery allowed despite true function/object/property gates?

  1. Yes. A v2 path proves every runtime policy is current.
  2. No. policy-mismatch with expectedBody=null.
Read the explained answer

No. policy-mismatch with expectedBody=null. — This profile requires policy revision 7. True permission gates do not approve an outdated declared policy revision.

Why do two schemes in one OpenAPI Security Requirement differ from two alternatives in the requirement array?

Selected lesson artifact fields; teaching example

securitySemantics.sameObjectAllSchemes
{"requirements":["scheme-A","scheme-B"],"operator":"AND"}
securitySemantics.arrayAlternatives
{"requirements":["requirement-A","requirement-B"],"operator":"OR"}
securitySemantics.emptyRequirementObject
{"representation":{},"anonymousAlternative":true}
  1. One object requires all schemes; the array permits one alternative.
  2. Only the first scheme applies everywhere; other fields are comments.
Read the explained answer

One object requires all schemes; the array permits one alternative. — sameObjectAllSchemes uses AND; arrayAlternatives uses OR. An empty requirement object can describe an anonymous alternative; description is not runtime enforcement.

Inventory marks notes-v1 retired with no fixture delivery. Why do a deprecated label or missing access logs not prove the endpoint was removed?

Read the explained answer

Inventory exposes ownership, environment, version, contract and retirement decisions. This fixture denies delivery for the retired entry; deployment removal needs independent observation. A deprecated field does not automatically disable the endpoint. Missing access logs do not prove no requests or no reachability. Schema validation checks shape while function/object/property permission remains separate.

□ I did not treat a retirement entry as deployment-removal evidence.

□ I did not treat missing logs or valid schema as authorization enforcement.
